Why do people put tin cans on wedding cars?
Long gone are dowries and you hope the groom doesn’t have his stag do the night before the wedding. But something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue is still going strong, as is tying tin cans to the back of a car.
You can tell when a couple has just tied the knot as it’s likely their car will say ‘just married’ and a string of noisy cans will be attached to the back.
The practice of tying on cans is thought to date back as far as Egyptian times.
Back then women were still the property of their fathers, and when a man and woman wed it was customary for the father to hand his new son-in-law a pair of his daughter’s sandals.
This symbolized she now belonged to him.
And the significance of shoes continued over the centuries, but people would throw shoes at the bride and groom, before evolving to shoes being tied to the back of the car.
It is thought this eventually changed to tin cans.

How did the ribbon tradition start?
If a bride and groom are on their way to their wedding, it’s likely their car will be quieter.
En route to the event it is customary to put ribbons on the bonnet, usually in white or a light colour.
The custom dates back to friends of the bride and grooms decorating the wedding bed with flowers and ribbons.
Well-wishers would escort the couple to their marital bed, “bedding” the newly-weds.
It was said the crowd wouldn’t leave until the new husband and wife has stripped off and were in bed together, symbolising the importance of procreation.
Luckily new couples don’t have an audience, but the decorating of the wedding car with ribbons is thought to stem from this ritual.

Best wedding cars 2020
Getting to and from your wedding venue should be just as exciting as the rest of it. Here are our picks of 2020 best Cars for your Big Day. View gallery
There’s already a lot to think about when it comes to planning your wedding, but arriving at your Big Day is a pretty Big Moment, so you’ll want to have some transport that matches the occasion. Whether you’re looking for something classy, classic, bold, cute or quirky, here are our picks of the best wedding cars in 2020
It might be the most popular wedding car, but it’s popular for a reason. Luxurious, elegant, and roomy, it doesn’t get much better than this. These cars can get about as bespoke as you want them to be, including the possibility of having a hand-stitched starlight headliner in the back, customised to constellations, names, or anything else you might want.
Need time to relax before getting to your ceremony? How about a Mercedes S-Class? There’s loads of room, massage seats, and you can even catch up on Homes Under the Hammer in the back (because there’s a TV there, not saying you should get the iPad out).
If you’re going to go fancy, you might as well go the whole hog and get something that will make you stand out from the crowd, like this not-so-subtle Lamborghini Aventador. Not recommended if you’re wearing your hair up though View gallery
This Mercedes-Benz offshoot stopped being made in 2012, but that doesn’t mean it’s not fancy enough for your Big Day. Only a Rolls-Royce comes close to the Maybach in terms of luxury, and there are apparently more than two million possible interior combinations. The 62 is 6.2-metres long (hence the name), so everyone will see you coming, although you might be so comfortable you doze off in the back. iew gal
Range Rover SV autobiography
Bit of a mouthful to say, but this is a product of Jaguar Land Rover’s Special Vehicle Operations (kinda like a James Bond-esque Q department…), and Autobiography is the fanciest Range Rover trim. Put the two together and you get a very luxurious Range Rover indeed. If you’re getting married down a muddy track, or if you just want to be a bit higher off the ground than everyone else and get out a bit more easily at the other end, give this one a go.
Rolls-Royce says of the Ghost, ‘There are those who measure success not just in material wealth, but in the richness of experience and appreciation of beauty. For these few, Ghost’s dramatic elegance and purity of design represent one of life’s finest rewards’. Does that sound like something you want to be driven to your wedding in? Most definitely. If you want sporty and relatively practical, how about a Porsche Panamera? It’s basically a high-performance sports car, with some really nice back seats. There’s room for four (well, three and a driver), and even a bit of space in the boot for the cake. View gallery
Aston Martin Rapide
An Aston Martin had to make the list somewhere. We’ve gone for the Rapide simply because it has the most space. It might not have the sex appeal of a DB5, but you can (just about) fit two people in the back, if they’re not too precious about their knees, and aren’t super tall. Ok, well there’s room for a bouquet or two in the back. View gallery
VW Camper Van
If all that’s a bit too flash and modern for you, how about a classic VW Camper Van? There’s plenty of room inside, and if you’re having a vintage or festival style wedding, it’ll look perfect in the photos.
