Why do people put tin cans on wedding cars?

Long gone are dowries and you hope the groom doesn’t have his stag do the night before the wedding. But something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue is still going strong, as is tying tin cans to the back of a car.

You can tell when a couple has just tied the knot as it’s likely their car will say ‘just married’ and a string of noisy cans will be attached to the back.

The practice of tying on cans is thought to date back as far as Egyptian times.

Back then women were still the property of their fathers, and when a man and woman wed it was customary for the father to hand his new son-in-law a pair of his daughter’s sandals.

This symbolized she now belonged to him.

And the significance of shoes continued over the centuries, but people would throw shoes at the bride and groom, before evolving to shoes being tied to the back of the car.

It is thought this eventually changed to tin cans.

How did the ribbon tradition start?

If a bride and groom are on their way to their wedding, it’s likely their car will be quieter.

En route to the event it is customary to put ribbons on the bonnet, usually in white or a light colour.

The custom dates back to friends of the bride and grooms decorating the wedding bed with flowers and ribbons.

Well-wishers would escort the couple to their marital bed, “bedding” the newly-weds.

It was said the crowd wouldn’t leave until the new husband and wife has stripped off and were in bed together, symbolising the importance of procreation.

Luckily new couples don’t have an audience, but the decorating of the wedding car with ribbons is thought to stem from this ritual.
